Where does the solution to the Nigerian national team's defensive problems lie?
It may well be in the great footballing nation of Zambia, who were crowned champions of Africa in 2012.
As Nigeria continues its campaign to return to the Africa Cup of Nations fiesta, young defender Ayo Oluwafemi, is optimistic that a call up to the national team could be on the cards for him after posting impressive performances for Zambian Premier League champions, Zesco United FC.
This great team from Northern Zambia have nurtured Oluwafemi into one of the best left-backs on the continent.
And the Super Eagles left back position has been a contentious issue for a while, as the duo of off-form Elderson Echiejile, and Scotland-based Juwon Oshaniwa have not really been top notch, while the newly capped Kingsley Madu would certainly need competition.
“That, I can provide,” says the multi-talented Oluwafemi, with an air of confidence. “However, I know it’s going to be difficult because I don’t even think the selectors know if the Zambia Premier League exists.
“For now I feel I have done enough to earn an invitation to play for my country, but that will be up to the coaches to decide. I am in the best form of my career right now and there cannot be a better time to show my nation what I am capable of,” Oluwafemi told Newswatch Times Sports from his base in Ndola, Zambia.
The young energetic left back previously played for a host of clubs in the South African Premier Soccer League (PSL), and his defensive skills and penchant for attacking play earned him rave reviews particularly during his three seasons with Jomo Cosmos FC.
He later played for Platinum Stars, and later signed for Bidvest Wits, but his contract was later invalidated following a change in coaching personnel.
Now a regular feature for the top Zambian side, Oluwafemi admits that it will be difficult for a player plying his trade in Southern Africa to be considered for the Super Eagles but fancies his chances all the same.
Oluwafemi, who joined Zesco United on a three-year deal in January alongside compatriot Christopher Chigozie , has been a regular feature for the Ndola-based side, and sterling contributions from his left wing back position has put the team in prime position to retain the prestigious MTN/FAZ Super Division title.
“So far so good for me; I have been playing regularly, and contributing towards the team’s success. With 11 games to go, I have two assists and my teammate Chigozie has really helped me to settle in.
“Some may rate the quality of football in Zambia low, but I am impressed with what I have seen so far. The Zambian league is competitive and promising,” Oluwafemi further disclosed.
