ZESCO United on Sunday recorded the 16th win of the season beating Konkola Blades 1-0 in a Super Division Week 22 match at Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola.
The victory was courtesy of Kenyan defender David Odhiambo’s header in the 50th minute.
Odhiambo, who is part of the Harambee Stars side that will face Zambia in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier in Nairobi on Sunday, nodded in a Cletus Chama free kick in the 50thminute.
Zesco have 52 points, seven better than Power Dynamos who beat Nkana 2-1 on Saturday.
Both teams missed a myriad of scoring opportunities in this Week 22 encounter.
Jackson Mwanza free kick was blocked by Blades defenders in the 20th minute and a minute later Chama was denied by the visitors.
‘Sharp’ Blades striker Moses Phiri shot straight at goalkeeper Jacob Banda in the 22nd minute.
In the second half, Zesco coach George Lwandamina introduced John Ching’andu, Maybin Mwaba and Jonas Sakuwaha for Justin Zulu, Mwape Mwelwa and Jackson Mwanza respectively but goals eluded the reigning champions.
Blades could have equalised on 78 minutes but Eric Chansa rammed the crossbar from a goal mouth melee and seven minutes later Zesco striker Winston Kalengo blasted his shot into the crossbar with goalkeeper Stephen Kabwe beaten.
