  • Zesco United broke Mufulira Blackpool hearts after they denied their hosts their first league win of the season

  • Mufulira back scored the opening goal of the game inside 5 minutes

  • Jesse's Were's equalizing goal is his fifth of the season against Mufulira Blackpool, and his 13th of the season overall

  • Zesco United, who have five games in hand, kept the pressure on league leaders, Zanaco, who are 15 points ahead of Zesco, albeit having played five games more.

Zesco United keep their hopes of a third consecutive Zambian Super League title alive after seeing off a Mufulira Blackpool team who are winless so far this season with 25 out of the 34 league games played.

With nearest rivals Zanaco crushing Mufulira Wanderers 4-0 at home, John Chin'gandu's winner secured a vital victory for the defending champions. Mufulira Blackpool, who have not won a league game this season, got off to a dream start but their hearts were broken when goals from Jesse Were and John Chin'gandu turned the game on its head.

The spirit Mufulira Blackpool showed in defeat will be scant consolation for them, but it appeared they were heading for a far worse defeat when John Chin'gandu put the defending champions ahead. That goal was scored far too easily from Mufulira Blackpool's point of view. Mufulira Blackpool's main tactic seemed to be to fire a succession of crosses into the box, despite that fact that their attack this season has been goal-shy and has offered very little going forward over the course of the season.

Zesco United goal-keeper Jacob Banda gave Mufulira Blackpool hope when he flapped at a couple of deliveries but Zesco remained comfortable and even created further chances to score goals. That all changed after half-time, when Zesco United finally found a way to hurt Mufulira Blackpool. Their opening goal brought wild celebrations from the's players and fans, and things got a little out of control when supporters started throwing objects and missiles onto the pitch just after Jesse Were had cancelled out the hosts' goal.

Lwandamina's men held firm at the back and began to build their own spell of pressure. Clatous Chama sent two shots skidding narrowly wide but the waves of Zesco United attacks were becoming relentless. Blackpool cracked after the hour mark, after a howler from their goal-keeper.
